In The Beginning Fabrics - Free Pattern

Another free pattern. Today I was checking out  In The Beginning Fabrics's Website. We have their new new collection - Legendary Basics arriving any day in store, While I was on the site I took the opportunity to check out their free patterns. I have always loved the designs of the Floragraphics and Wintergraphics that Jason Yenter has designed however how to make a quilt with this fantastic fabric? This pattern uses Jason Yenter's Wintergraphic Collection however it would look fantastic in Christmas Fabrics (it's not to late to start that quilt for Christmas!). The quilts takes full advantage of the fabric collection, especially in the border.
The pattern can be downloaded at http://www.inthebeginningfabrics.com/pdf/Wintergraphix.pdf

Free Pattern 12" Block: 8 Point Star

This week's free pattern from Berrima Patchwork is called8 Point Star. This is an easy star pattern as there are no Y seams to sew and that pattern uses triangles. The block can be made up in just 2 fabrics or more. The sample we have made uses 3 different fabrics. This block is also a great way to use up all your left over scraps and create a fantastic looking quilt by sewing several of them together.

International Quilt Festival 2011 - Part 1

Below is a selection of the photos that I took while at the Houston International Quilt Festival. Festival runs from Thursday until Sunday HOWEVER classes for Festival starts on the Monday and run till Sunday. On the Tuesday night there is the International Quilt Association Awards night and on the Wednesday night there is preview night for the show.
While at festival I attend many of the classes that are on offer. This year I was fortunate to take classes from Libby Lehman, Melinda Bula, Nancy Prince, Gail Garber, Gilbert Muniz, Cathy Miller, and Susan Brubaker Knapp.
The International Quilt Association is responsible for all the "quilt show" if you can call it that, it is SOOO MUCH MORE! The quilts on display are the best of the best, there is nearly $100000, worth of prizes awards. Think of a top quilter and chances are they either have had a quilt hung or have won a prize at this show. On the Tuesday night before the show opens they hold an awards night. During the evening, all the prizes are awarded. They have a large screen which shows you the winners and their quilts. The winners of each of the categories have their quilts unveiled at the show and they are on display around the room. It is very exciting as I know the quilter who have won a prize are notified but are not aware of which prize they have won. The top award winners, are also notificed and recieve return trip to Houston to recieve their prizes and to talk about their quilt during the show, once again they don't know which of the top prizes they have won until they are revealed at the show.
Below are some photos from the International Quilt Associations Award Night

IQA Awards

Preview Night occurs on the Wednesday Evening before the show. This is a chance to shop before the show starts (and the crowds!) and to see the award winners before the show officially starts. If you have enrolled in classes or a member of the IQA you get early entry at 5pm otherwise a ticket can usually be purchased for entry at 7pm. At both these opening time there are lines to get into the show! I walked out just after 7pm and the line to get in was outside onto the sidewalk.
Here are some photos from inside the show.

New Fabric In Store: Morris & Company

Morris & Company by Barbara Brackman for Moda Fabrics has finally arrived in the store at Berrima Patchwork
Morris and Company

We have the entire collection in store and hope to have all the precuts available next week. This stunning collection has 40 different pieces which includes eight prints in a variety of colorways.

Morris & Company
Moda has written about the collection "This latest collection of William Morris reproductions by Barbara Brackman is named for "the firm", as Morris and his friends called their design workshop. Morris & Company included the designers, dyers, printers and weavers who followed Morris's ideals and continued them into the twentieth century. Morris & Company was in business from 1875 to 1940.
This collection highlights William Morris’s skills at translating nature into pattern. From Eyebright, a tiny alpine bloom, to the showy Anemone, the florals reveal Morris’s close observation of his garden. Brother Rabbit features visitors with whom he shared the garden---birds and rabbits. The large print Wandle is named “to honor our helpful stream,” the river that flowed near the dyeworks, providing water for the coloring processes as well as a lovely landscape. Subtle colors echo the shades of the natural dyes so important to Morris’s vision. Morris & Company will inspire all who love the Arts and Crafts look for quilts, clothing and decorating."

Or go to www.berrimapatchwork.com.au and click on the Online Store to view Morris & Company.
Below is a selection from Morris & Company collection - It is going to be hard to pick my favourite.

New Fabric In Store - Etchings

Some new fabric arrived in at Berrima Patchwork while I was away. Etchings is a new collection by 3 Sisters for Moda Fabrics.
Etchings
Moda describes this collection as:

"Classic French elegance is captured beautifully in this collection of lush botanical designs, some featuring delicate, sinuous line work to coordinate with the engraved architectural print derived from an antique book the Sisters acquired on one of their many flea market jaunts. Damasks and tapestry prints, as well as a lovely range of woven cotton in warm shades of grey stone, aqua, rich red and ivory parchment paper are reminiscent of stepping off the bustling Paris streets into a grand foyer of a historic theater with dramatic draperies and ornate moldings."
There are 3 different colourways that we have in store: Grey, Aqua and Red. I love the grey colourway, can't wait to sew something in it. We also have Charm Squares and Jelly Rolls available in this collection.

International Quilt Festival Houston 2011

The International Quilt Festival is over for 2011. Had a great time, meeting up with everyone, taking some fantastic classes with great teachers, and getting to see all those amazing quilts on display. I was very lucky to meet up with 3 of the teachers that we will be hosting for the Quilting In The Highlands : Carol Doak, Melinda Bula and Sue Dennis. As an added bonus I even got to attend a class with Melinda (those of you who have booked into her class are going to LOVE it!)
I have been a bit slack over the past couple of days blogging so I decided to create a video slide show which has a taste of some of the classes that I took while I was at festival.

Most of the teachers that were teaching do have websites and many of them have books published if you are interested in more information about their work.
I'll be posting more when I get back to Australia (currently waiting in an airport for my plane)

Enjoy

Never Know What You Will Find in Houston!

You just never know what you will see when you are in Houston. I was walking through the foyer of the Downtown Hilton Hotel today and there was a display of Pumpkins by the staff of the hotel for Halloween. They all have a Disney Theme so I guess that was the guidelines. We don't really have a big Halloween events in Australia so I do love to see it when I'm over here in the US. It was rather scary however when I went down to breakfast in the hotel to be greeted by a server dressed up as the character from the Scream Movies! Enjoy the photos
